LANGUAGES OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE: VITALITY PERSPECTIVES (THE CASE STUDY OF THE LANGUAGES SOUTH SIBERIA)

The paper examines the prospects of vitality for the indigenous languages on the example of the languages of Southern Siberia — Altai, Tuvinian and Khakass. Addressing specific language situations makes it possible to obtain more reliable assessments of the reviving or strengthening the intergenerational transmission of native languages, taking into account: a) status, demographic and communicative characteristics; b) assessment of their vitality in the existing sociolinguistic classifications; c) conditions for reversing language shift (Fishman, 1991) and the prospects for research and understanding of the phenomenon of language revival.
