The article aims to analyze the functioning of the Kola Saami languages within the ethnic space of the Murmansk Region. It is emphasized that the languages that function in a given territory — the transboundary space of the Arctic (Saami, Norwegian, and Russian) have different demographic and functional capacity. The Saami, the indigenous small-numbered people of the Murmansk Region, understood and mastered the conversational Russian language since the 18th century. In modern conversational practice with native speakers, code switching is noted. Coherent speech in the Saаmi language is not marked. It is noted that the optimization of the process of functioning of the language of the indigenous people of the North — the Saami language can only contribute to changing its status.
