This article presents a description of the current state of the de facto minority language — Karelian. The author refers to the census materials of 2002 and 2010, regulatory and policy documents that have confirmed the provisions of the Karelian language, and the results of the international research project on multilingualism in Europe — ELDIA, including the position of the Karelian language in Russia.
