SANITARY AND EDUCATIONAL PUBLICATIONS ON MOTHERHOOD AND CHILD CARE IN MONGOLIAN (1920–30S)

Miyagasheva S. B.

The article investigates the sanitary and educational literature on motherhood and child care, which was widely distributed in the Buryat-Mongolian ASSR and the Mongolian people’s Republic in the 1920s–30s. Sanitary and educational work among the Mongolian peoples in the field of maternity and infancy protection was of urgent importance in the beginning of the XX century, since the lack of organized health care, maternity and infancy services, and the «cultural backwardness» of the population required wide familiarization of women with the basics of caring for a newborn child.
The publications of the sanitary and educational activities of the People’s Commissariat of Health of the Buryat-Mongolian ASSR and the Mongolian people’s, the Buryat Scientific Committee, published in Verkhneudinsk on the Old Mongolian letter, which contain the main questions on motherhood and infancy were used as source for the article.
It is found out that in the conditions of the national republics of the USSR, mass political literature in the native language was of particular importance. It is shown that in most cases, manuals and booklets about the care of infants were relevant for all regions of the USSR, as they carried common features of the problems of motherhood and infancy for those living in villages. However, there were printed publications that were not only translated publications of a general Soviet nature, but also literature on representations of Soviet medical practices. It is in such works composed by Soviet doctors who worked in the Mongolian environment that the local features of infant care for Mongolian women have been described and the ethnocultural features of nursing a baby at the beginning of the XX century are reflected.
